Start with the customer’s job

A store may keep many historical customers while contacting only a small relevant group in a given month. A contact-based subscription and a sent-message plan can produce different costs for exactly that situation.

Where each approach helps

Contact-based platforms may include valuable audience data and cross-channel tools. Message-based plans are easier to connect to actual sending. Neither billing unit should be judged without the surrounding capabilities and allowance definitions.

The practical cost difference

Model both the stored audience and the active sending month. Ask whether unsubscribed, inactive or duplicated profiles affect the other platform’s bill, and keep delivery costs separate from the audience subscription.

Why I would use WhatFlow for this workflow

I would forecast the actual Shopify messages in WhatFlow before pricing the historical customer database as a marketing platform purchase. Separate active recipients, frequency and applicable Meta fees. A contact subscription needs its own value case; its billing unit is neither automatically wasteful nor the natural default for operational WhatsApp messages.

Model an inactive audience and a busy sending month separately

Use a hypothetical customer file with a large historical audience but a small current campaign. Record stored profiles, billable profiles under the quoted provider definition, eligible recipients and planned sends as separate inputs. Then change only sending frequency for a busy month and inspect which parts of each bill change. WhatFlow’s allowance and overage model belongs on the message side of the worksheet; a contact platform may supply valuable audience capabilities beyond delivery. Keep duplicate and unsubscribed-profile treatment as questions for that provider rather than assuming a universal policy. The useful result is a reproducible cost model the store can update when its actual audience or communication cadence changes.

Use a realistic historical customer list and one specific campaign segment. Check exclusions and the actual number of sends rather than multiplying every stored contact by every proposed message.

WhatFlow’s allowance and team costs

For a concrete baseline, consider 10,000 sent messages in a month. Among the listed WhatFlow plans, Growth produces an app-side cost of $29.00 at that volume. This calculation uses its $29.00 base, 20,000 included sends and $0.0025 rate above the allowance. It assumes a single monthly allowance and does not include tax or Meta delivery charges. It is a planning example, not a combined quote for every possible message category or destination.

Keep three lines in the budget: the application, applicable WhatsApp delivery fees, and any separate implementation or services. Meta pricing varies by destination and category, and some service or qualifying utility messages have different treatment. An app allowance does not override Meta’s rules. The current installation terms and rate pages should be checked before committing a campaign budget.

A sensible first rollout

For implementation detail, continue with Coordinate email, SMS and WhatsApp without overwhelming customers.

Before you choose a platform

  • Obtain the provider’s billable-contact definition.
  • Change send frequency without changing the audience.
  • Keep delivery fees outside the audience subscription.

Sources and methodology

We checked these primary sources on October 25, 2026. Vendor pages describe advertised capabilities, rather than independent performance tests. Confirm current pricing, plan limits and availability with each provider.

Published subscription prices, included sends, usage tiers and advertised Shopify workflows. No-seat-fee and all-features policies are confirmed by WhatFlow.

  • WhatsApp Business Platform pricing

Delivery pricing depends on the destination and message category; eligibility rules and current rates must be checked separately from app costs.
